The results of the French elections showed that the far-right National Rally topped up the results. Expected for some people unexpected for others it is now a fact. I am asking myself why this happened and whom to blame. The problem is that such an easy answer doesn’t exist it is far more complicated than it might be seen. But I have some initial thoughts about it apart from the deteriorating living standards and the economic and political crisis.
I would like to concentrate on one issue -which is prominently used by the far right- which is Muslims and migrants. It is normal for the voters to lean toward the far right when they are exposed to an exclusionary hate speech daily from the ruling government which is supposed to be a moderate, liberal one. Let’s remember together how many times the existing governments spoke about migrants and Muslims -especially- as a problem. They accused them systematically of not integrating, of having an “Islamic Separatism” tendency only because these people respect their obligatory religious values by praying and wearing a head scarf for example. What is the problem in this if they believe in what they are doing and are not forced to do so? The speech of the government to eliminate these people’s rights and always accusing them made it a normal behavior. Thus, it is not a problem if someone voted for the far-right to get rid of these people outside the country instead of marginalizing them. I personally cannot see a huge difference between the ruling party and the far-right in France regarding this issue. The ruling party has managed during the last time through its policies to force the French Muslim citizens to leave the country according to many sources like France 24 and the Guardian. Now the far-right will make this faster.
Most people are not racist by nature they are affected by the medium and context around them. And when this context is all concentrating on one thing and feeding the brains of the people daily through media and other outlets, it is hard to find resistance. It is all about time when we will be able to see a different Europe. Europe that will lack real diversity and it will lose part of its citizens.
